The Sabbath Day

What Day did God set aside to worship?

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the  sabbath day, and hallowed it.  (Exodus 20:11) God's Ten Commandments

Did Jesus keep the Sabbath?

Jesus taught Gods will for us and healed the sick on the Sabbath.  This was not intended to make the Sabbath merely another day.  It was, after all a commandment.  Jesus taught us that the Sabbath is a time for enriching our relationship with god, above and beyond our daily devotional. By healing  the sick, I believe he reinforced the importance of caring for others.  After all in Matthew 22:36-40, he tells us all the commandments hang on our love for God and our love for one another.

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. (Mark 6:2)

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.
(Luke 4:16)

Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people.
(Luke 4:31)

and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”  He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?  How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." (Matthew 12:10-12)

Note also that Jesus did in fact rest on the Sabbath, and was only resurrected after its passing.

It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, (Mark 15:42 (In context: Mark 15:41-43)

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.
(Mark 16:1)

Does God expect us to keep the Sabbath Holy today?

He said to them, "This is what the LORD commanded: 'Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD . So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.' " (Exodus 16:23)

"If ye love Me, keep My commandments."  (John 14:15)

"He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him."  (John 14:21)

Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." (Luke 6:5)

Please contribute your thoughts on the Sabbath and I will post them under your name.  Remember that God intends for us to observe his day as a day of rest from our worries and toil.  We worship him out of love for the great gift he made on our behalf.  We celebrate and praise our creator.

So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. (Mark 2:28)

Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)

There remains, then, a Sabbathrest for the people of God;  (Hebrews 4:9)
